Fiberglass Pool Maintenance

The Manly Guide to Seasonal Pool Maintenance – Fiberglass

The Manly Guide to Seasonal Pool Maintenance – Fiberglass

One of the top reasons people choose to install a fiberglass pool is the minimal maintenance they need. But even these pools can use a little attention now and then.

Regular maintenance tips for your fiberglass pool include:

  • Chemistry: at least once each week, you should check the level of your pool sanitizing agents and pH. While topping up your chlorine or other sanitizer levels is recommended on an as-needed basis, pH should not be adjusted more than once each week
  • Water level: the optimal fill level for your pool is the midpoint of your skimmer, so when there are plenty of kids splashing away use your hose and top the level up. Similarly, if you have a heavy rainstorm or accidental overfill, a submersible pump might be a good option – but contact your pool professionals for specifics to avoid damage.
  • Skimming: empty the skimmer every few days, but also use a net and skim leaves and other floating debris off the surface of the water
  • Scrubbing: to avoid discoloration, brush your pool down at least twice a week – if you have a pool vacuum, run it on the same schedule.
  • Filtration: be sure your filter basket is emptied regularly, at least once a week and always after large gatherings. Also, set your filter on a regular schedule so that it’s running for at least six hours a day during peak season.

In addition, occasionally you should undertake monthly maintenance tasks like:

  • CHEMICALS: in addition to your ongoing checks for sanitizer and pH levels, you should do a monthly test of your pool water that includes pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid.
  • FILTERS: whether you have a cartridge, sand, or diatomaceous earth filter, it is one of the most important keys to your pool operating smoothly. Cleaning your filter and regularly back flushing your filtration pipe work is important to ensuring reliable pump function.
  • INSPECTION: for a fiberglass pool, one of the most important regular checks is a visual inspection for cracks.
  • STAINS: while you’re inspecting for cracks, make note of any stains or discoloration, particularly along the water line. A Magic Eraser can work wonders on these with a little elbow grease – and for tougher stains, you can try treating the area with ascorbic acid.

Many of the maintenance steps for your vinyl liner pool are the same as those you would undertake for a fiberglass pool, but there are several differences worth noting.  To learn more about how to maintain your vinyl liner pool, automatic and solid safety cover, or to view a fully comprehensive season pool maintenance checklist.  Download our e-book Manly Maintenance by clicking here or on the image below.

Tun Tavern Virginia

240 years ago a few good men got together in a place called Tun Tavern

240 years ago a few good men got together in a place called Tun Tavern over a beer and decided to make sure the country that they all fought so hard to get to would be protected.  They made an oath.

240 years later this country owes it’s flag and it’s land to every brave soul who has EARNED that eagle globe and anchor. We live today on this beautiful land because of them.

Marines have been in EVERY WAR since that day and have never been defeated. They don’t often get recognized and they rarely star in movies. They are the ones who would rather just do what they do and not complain or brag or even let you know who they are or what they have done.

If your blessed enough to know one, well just carefully thank them and enjoy life that he or his brothers has so graciously given for your freedom and liberty.

winter

Thank goodness for the Jandy automation package that’s installed on this Viking pool. It comes complete with Freeze Protection built it. That’s right anytime the outdoor temperature approaches freezing the equipment pad automatically cuts on and operates the pool and spa so the lines or equipment do not freeze and break. It doesn’t matter if the pump was scheduled to turn on or the owner forgot to turn it on knowing it would get below freezing or if they were out of town and couldn’t turn it on. It did it all by itself.

Pool equipment is very expensive and should be protected. If your pool is not winterized or does not have this freeze protection equipment installed then make sure the pump stays running during freezing temperatures. During extreme cold temperatures you will even want to make sure the speeds on the pump if available are turned up to the highest setting as even running water will freeze at lower speeds. You can also cover your equipment with a fire proof heat rated blanket which will provide an insulation barrier over any exposed plumbing until the temps rise back closer to 32.

Stay warm and think spring. It will be 90 degrees and humid before we know it. Great deals are to be had on new in stock pools right now before the new shipments arrive. Call today before they’re gone and get on the build schedule that’s filling up fast, so you can take the plunge when the weather allows.

Until then I need to go turn up the speed on my pump before the Siberian Cold hits.

January in Jersey

Looking out the window of the Tropicana this morning the sky is bright and blue and the roads are clear and black. The big named storm of the year stayed home or offshore and decided not to ruin the Pool and Spa Show in Atlantic City New Jersey like everyone worried it would.
As I head out today to meet new friends and partners I am thankful for the opportunity to be here and that the storm fizzled out. As we pray for our neighbors up in New England and my family in Connecticut I also think about my neighbors and friends down in Tampa and how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful environment without snow.

Thanks to my teammates back home and the work they are doing out in the cold this week. I am sure John and family will be very thankful and happy as well once the install is completed. Thanks Danny and team for powering through the cold and accomplishing yet another mission.

We just returned a couple of weeks ago from the islands. We are very fortunate to have incredible partners such as Latham to share our vacation with in places like Grand Cayman. I hope everyone that attended the conference and shared time with me at my table on Monday enjoyed and learned something about not only Fiberglass Pools, but also what a great company in Latham that we work with. Thanks Mark and team for an amazing week of fun, sun and networking. I look forward to the trip in Puerto Rico next year and hope that it’s as successful as Grand Cayman was.

Until then, please send comments or questions to,

Growth of The Pool Guyz

When I walked outside this morning to breathe in some good ole salty Virginia Beach humidity and shake off the comforts of modern day air conditioning I was pleasantly surprised to find what felt like a cool mountain fall  morning. So without wasting too much time and with a bit of excitement I quickly dug out a pair of jeans for the first time since May. Added a long sleeve T Shirt and started my day. As the day progressed I felt it was a good time to reflect on this past pool season which had its ups and downs with not only the heat but also the rain, the struggles and the accomplishments.

Scheduling and installing two to three pools per week for months at a time certainly has its challenges to say the least. For me this year has been extremely challenging due to events not only out of my control but also for decisions that Ive had to make that no business leader ever wants to make. Personnel and policy changes are always tough to deal with and toss in a few issues and problems that can make a well seasoned company such as ours re think our game plan after all these years is definitely challenging to say the least.

After 9 wonderful years and hundreds of successful installs operating out of our Viking Drive location we made a move to a larger and more organized private location a mile away to 2640 Quality Court in Virginia Beach. This was particularly difficult due to moving in the peak of our season in April and May. As normal the Guyz carried the load and didn’t miss a step or complain while having to be movers and staying on schedule building beautiful pools. It’s now September and although we still haven’t fully settled into our new headquarters I know it was the right decision.  We now have ample space for all of the construction equipment that is required to build not only a hundred pools per year but also stock and display dozens of beautiful pool shells. We can also now stock a ton more quality Jandy pool parts for our warranty and service division and keep all of that much more organized and available for our service technicians which allows for faster repair times.

As the Company continues to grow in new locations and markets, I feel blessed and honored to be a part of the Latham family and offer the finest fiberglass products available. This is my second full year now on the Latham Dealer Advisory Board. Working hand in hand with the very best dealers in the country has been a terrific experience. As we all have faced the same challenges of a struggling economy it is at the board meetings where I find the motivation to always want to come home and challenge the team to work harder and do even more. Each time I return they are eager and ready for the challenge.

As the climax of another season is upon us I am very grateful for our entire staff, there families and our partners for a very successful pool season. I am also thankful for our customers who made the decision to allow our company to help them make there backyard goals and dreams come true. With any construction project and as every company knows being involved with so many different customers,  subcontractors and products brings enormous challenges. Our goal is, has always been and always will be to satisfy the client while being solid professionals and doing everything possible to complete the project on time, on budget and with 100% customer satisfaction. Obviously that is extremely difficult to do and can’t always happen. For those who feel we haven’t delivered just that I not only apologize but promise to do everything within reason to make it a reality.

Next season will be here before we know it. We will be ready for it and more prepared than ever to face the opportunity and challenges it will bring. In my opinion, The Pool Guyz has its best team ever assembled. We will be working hard all offseason training and structuring our company for another great season.

One piece fiberglass pools are growing faster than any other type of in ground pool. With the speed of the install process, the extremely low maintenance and the awsome longevity of the product as well as its unlimited design capabilities and incredible beauty it will only continue to outgrow everything else.
